Description of Site: The Greenburgh Nature Center (GNC) is a 33-acre nature preserve with trails, a pond, an old orchard succession site, and gardens. More than 70,000 visitors come to the GNC each year. The property is a wildlife habitat refuge for both indigenous species and the hundreds of species of migratory birds that use it as a resting place in spring and fall. The property includes 30 acres of woodland, two significant wetland sites, and an old orchard succession site Eastern box turtles use as a nesting area.
Customizing the System: When the Greenburgh Nature Center needed a solution that would allow them to display the temperature difference between a green roof and a regular asphalt roof, PurePoint Energy provided it. We hooked up the existing 90-Watt solar panel to power the two large temperature displays, which showed a 75º difference in temperature between the different surfaces. This project illustrates that green roofing could contribute in the fight to stop global warming!
“I am happy to report the temperature monitoring equipment you installed on our green roof education exhibit here at the Greenburgh Nature Center has been a big hit with our visitors and tells the story as I envisioned it. Well done! Being that you were the 3rd consultant I had to approach to get this job accomplished, I want to thank you for your creativity, promptness and professionalism. Its good to see, that there are those of you who are still out there who take the time to bring their thoughts to the table and are willing to work with a client.I look forward to working with Purepoint on the installation of the solar grid for our barnyard exhibit. I should know more about the project funding in the weeks to come.” –Kurt Hundgen, Executive Director |
